Pregnancy Options Counseling

Know the facts. Move forward. Be well informed.

If you’ve just discovered you’re pregnant and are considering abortion ─ a quick decision isn’t necessarily your best bet ─ but an informed decision is. Though this may be a difficult time for you, it’s important to verify and confirm your pregnancy.

Inspire Women’s Center offers pregnancy testing and limited ultrasound at no cost to you.

Your private consultation will be unbiased and centered on your needs – including free pregnancy testing, information on your pregnancy options and a limited ultrasound for eligible clients. You will receive accurate information while also exploring additional resources that may be available to you.

If your pregnancy is unplanned, you’ll want to think carefully about what decision is best for you. A Client Care Advocate will provide you with information on all of the options you wish to explore, including parenting, adoption and abortion ─ without pressuring you into a decision.

Your first step does not have to include fee-based services. You can get answers first before having to pay for services. Inspire Women’s Center will provide you with:

1 in 4 pregnancies will end in natural miscarriage.

Miscarriages are very common, especially during early pregnancy. Ultrasound exams can determine the viability of a pregnancy ─ since at about 6 weeks a heartbeat can be detected (although the heart begins beating at approximately 21 days).

Ultrasound may be able to help a physician determine if your pregnancy is at risk for a natural miscarriage.

Inspire’s limited ultrasound test will determine:

  • If your pregnancy is viable (detects cardiac activity / heartbeat)
  • How far along you are (gestational age)
  • The location of your pregnancy (intrauterine or ectopic)

What is an ectopic pregnancy? Why is it important?

  • An ectopic pregnancy is a serious, potentially life-threatening condition
  • A fertilized egg implants outside the uterus – most often in the fallopian tubes
  • The morning after pill will not end an ectopic pregnancy
  • This type of pregnancy can only be detected via ultrasound
  • This condition requires emergency care

An ultrasound is the only way to confirm the viability of your pregnancy and provide a medical diagnosis of pregnancy. Inspire Women’s Center offers this service free of charge.

Suction Abortion

Suction Aspiration (also called Manual Vacuum Aspiration or Mini Vac) can be performed up to 14 weeks after your last monthly period (LMP).

The cervix is stretched open with dilators (metal rods). A hollow plastic tube is inserted into the uterus.

The fetus and the remaining contents of the uterus are removed using a suction device.

Suction Curettage: between 6 to 14 weeks after LMP

Suction Curettage (also called Dilation and Curettage) can be performed up to 14 weeks after the last monthly period (LMP).

The cervix is stretched open with dilators (metal rods). The fetus and remaining contents of the uterus are removed with a hollow plastic instrument connected by tubing to a suction machine.

After suctioning, the walls of the uterus are scraped with a curette, a loop-shaped knife, to ensure all parts of the fetus, placenta, and contents of the uterus have been completely removed.

Dilation & Evacuation (D&E) between 13 to 24 weeks after LMP

Dilation and Evacuation (D&E) can be performed from 13 weeks after last monthly period (LMP) to 24 weeks of pregnancy.

Sponge-like pieces of absorbent material called laminaria sticks are placed into the cervix. These dried seaweed sticks become moist and slowly open the cervix. This material remains in place for several hours or overnight. A second or third application of the sponge material may be necessary.

Dilating rods may also be used to further enlarge the cervical opening. Following dilation of the cervix, medications may be given to ease pain and prevent infection. After a local or general anesthesia has been administered, the fetus and placenta are removed from the uterus with a grasping tool and suction. A curette may then be used to scrap out any remaining tissue from the uterus.
