Abortion Pill

The Abortion Pill (or RU486) is known as a non-surgical abortion and is the common name for using two different drugs to end a pregnancy; mifepristone and misoprostol. Usually, you may need as many as 3 appointments for this type of abortion.

*Without an ultrasound confirmation of pregnancy, you cannot be certain the pregnancy is in the uterus and not the fallopian tube (ectopic pregnancy). This can be a life-threatening condition. Inspire can provide a limited ultrasound for you at no cost.

Before taking the pill, get informed and know the risks.

When can I take it?

This type of abortion can be done up to 70 days (10 weeks) after the first day of your last menstrual period.

What you may experience:

  • Heavy bleeding
  • Mild to strong cramping
  • Nausea (potentially with vomiting)
  • Dizziness
  • Weakness
  • Diarrhea
  • Seeing the products of conception as they pass
  • Process may be unsuccessful requiring a surgical abortion (incurring additional expense)

How it Works

The first drug taken is called mifepristone which blocks progesterone, the hormone needed to sustain a pregnancy. Mifepristone blocks your body’s own progesterone, preventing the pregnancy from growing. Although it’s possible to experience some light bleeding before taking the second drug, the majority of heavy bleeding and cramping happens after taking the second pill.

The second drug is called misoprostol and it taken either immediately after the first or up to 48 hours later. This drug causes cramping and bleeding to expel the fetus. After taking the second pill, you should prepare to experience heavy bleeding, cramping and possibly other symptoms as well.

Light spotting could continue for up to 10 days. In some cases, the pill does not work, and a surgical procedure is needed.

If you do not experience bleeding within 24 hours after taking the 2nd drug, call your doctor.
